COVID-19 Precautions:

Data Breach Notification:

Dear Patient of Cahaba Psychology Center:

We regret to inform you that Cahaba Psychology Center’s email system was compromised on Friday, June 11, 2021.  Email messages were sent to some of our contacts as if they had come from Jennifer Pickering, our Office Manager, and from Cahaba Psychology Center itself.

These email messages were not sent by our office or our staff and appear to have been used in a scheme to attempt to get money sent to the hackers.  When we became aware of these email messages later that same day, we immediately secured our email account by changing the password and sending out a message to ignore the hacker’s email.  Unfortunately, individual recipient email addresses could be identified on these email messages.

We have investigated this data breach by contacting some of the recipients and cross-referencing the email addresses with our contact list.  We believe that the only information that the hackers had access to were email addresses and messages that were not connected to any other protected health information.  The hackers did not have access to our electronic patient records which are stored on a different system.

In order to protect your data and prevent any further data loss, we immediately changed the password to the email account.  We then contacted by email those who were affected to warn them of the breach and the deceptive email message that they received.  We have subsequently pruned the contact list in the affected email account of any patient email addresses.  We are currently shifting our email system to a more secure provider that uses two-factor authentication and encryption.

We recommend that you delete any questionable email messages that you have received from our office and that you do not reply to any requests for assistance or money in email form.  If you have any questions about an email message that was sent from our office, please call us at (205) 403-0955 to verify the information before responding.

We want you to know that we take our responsibility to protect your protected health information very seriously and we are working to make sure that a situation like this does not happen again.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office and we will be glad to assist you.
